AWT - Day 2 - Three Intricate Boxes

Hello All! My name is Nathan Commissariat, and I am one of three students in the Advanced Woodworking techniques J-Term. Through these three weeks we will all be learning new joinery methods and develop our understanding of woodworking in general.

Today we began our first project which is to create a box using two new techniques. The two techniques we learned for the project included rabbet cuts and dado cuts. Rabbet cuts are essentially notches that have been taken out from the edge of a piece of wood, whereas dado cuts are notches taken out somewhere within the area of the board (See Elliott’s corresponding photo blog for a visual example). The box we created was to be made with rabbet cuts at the bottom of the sides to fit the base into, and a dado cuts to fit a glass lid into.

Before we created the actual box each of us had to create prototypes using plywood. Although difficult to understand at first, we soon made scale drawings, cut lists, and eventually started cutting the pieces.

I am excited for tomorrow when we can finally begin putting the pieces together and make our box!
