Today, we continued working
on our third project: a desk that will span the length of the locker hallway.
We began the day with a trip to Home Depot; we bought an assortment of
items—wall brackets, polycrylic, a new hacksaw blade, and anchors—that we
needed to both finish and install the butcher block. From Home Depot, we
traveled to Texas Iron and Metal Co. to pick up the steel bars that will span
the length of the block and act as its supports. Our final destination was
Southland Hardware; there, we picked up long bolts necessary to attach the
brackets to the metal studs in the wall.
We began the
afternoon by cutting down the steel bars to length with the hacksaw. After the
bars had been resized, the group split into two. Mr. Grisbee and I worked on
attaching the brackets to the wall while Nathan and Elliott sanded and added
layers of polycrylic to the butcher board. For the remainder of the afternoon,
Mr. Grisbee and I drilled holes into the walls, attached the brackets to the
metal studs, ensured that the brackets were level, and finished screwing the bolts in with the impact driver. We were making pretty good time up until the last
hole we attempted to drill, which took us the rest of the afternoon. It took us
the rest of the afternoon because we were not, in fact, drilling into a metal
stud like we originally anticipated. Instead, we were drilling into one of the
steel support beams.
All in all, I had a pretty
great day, and I am eager to finish installing the desk tomorrow.
