Having sized the pieces
necessary to assemble the shelf, and practiced setting the hand router and
setting the router fence to achieve a perfectly spaced dado yesterday
afternoon, the team was ready to begin working our way through the cut list
this morning. After completing every cut on the cut list just after lunch, we
assembled the shelf to ensure that the pieces fit snugly together; seeing as
they did, we disassembled the shelf and sanded every piece using the random
orbital sanders. Before we started sanding, Mr. Grisbee used the reciprocating
saw on the base of the shelf to cut out spaces for the drills, and then I
passed over the spaces with the hand router with a quarter-inch round over bit
to give the piece a softer finish. We sanded them first with 220 grit, and then
passed over them again with 320 grit to ensure a smooth finish. On Tuesday, we
will assemble the shelf and begin our next project: a desk at the end of the
high school’s locker hallway.
I am very excited
to assemble the shelf, mount it on the wall, and fit the power tools into the
spaces we designated for them on Tuesday. In my eyes, the shelf is going to
make La Tinkería look a whole lot better, freeing up space and decluttering the
corner of the room where the power tools reside now.
