AWT - Day 8 - Home Depot, Cutting wood, and...DADOS

Today was a fun-filled, productive day. After finishing the designs for the power tool shelf yesterday, and completing the final version of the cut list in the morning, we were ready to get the wood to build our shelf!

We took to the streets around mid-morning and soon after arrived at our local home-depot. We first purchased a few miscellaneous products, such as drill bits, sandpaper, and other items that were running low in the Tinkeria. I also had the unique opportunity to be the cart driver, cutting around corners, and ensuring efficient and speedy transportation. We also purchased a brand new drill set that will be housed in our brand new power tool shelf, which would increase the efficiency and timeliness of our projects. We then moved on to the wood section to pick up two sheets of plywood for our shelf.

After coming back to school and having our lunch we got to work on cutting our wood. We also learned more about working smarter, not harder, with methods to ensure precise measurements without a measuring tape. For example, when we were cutting a board of wood exactly ¾” less than a previous cut to which our fence was set to, we just added a ¾” piece of wood to the side of the fence. I am excited to keep building upon my knowledge and acquiring techniques that will help me in my future woodworking endeavors.

After cutting all the pieces necessary for the shelf, we used the last 30 minutes of the day to practice cutting dados and clean up the Tinkeria. I cut a perfect dado on my second try, which I then placed a board into to ensure the cuts precision. We will be using several dados in the shelf for a variety of compartments, so practicing how to make the cuts will definitely help!

Excited to complete assembling our shelf (hopefully tomorrow - fingers crossed)!
